Amphiteare Backpackers Lodge. Drakensberge.

Midway between Johannesburg and Durban on an idyllic piece of land, encircled by awe-inspiring mountains is a beautiful lodge that takes its name from “The Amphitheatre," the most famous geographic feature in the Northern Drakensberg, South Africa. Widely regarded as one of the most impressive cliffs on Earth. The resort looks directly onto its facade and on a clear day, after the rains, the 1 km Tugela Falls can be seen plunging down the ancient rock face.

Walk out the gate and into beautiful grasslands, populated with buck, small mammals and an abundance of birdlife. Take a jog past the dam, river and wetland. Unique dwellings are crafted from stone and thatch, with stained glass, mosaics, metal and wooden carvings. Some rooms are located in converted grain silos. The entire place is surrounded by beautiful indigenous rockeries.

Enjoy colourful cocktails in a funky bar and delicious meals in the restaurant. Cooked from ingredients grown in the organic veggie patch. Plan to stay for one night and end up staying a week. There is just so much to do here, and, of course, there is that spectacular view. From the lawn, a picture postcard panorama takes in the entire Northern range from the Amphitheatre to Cathkin Peak, enticing you to explore it!

The Drakensberg is the premier hiking destination in South Africa, and the Northern Drakensberg is regarded by many as the most dramatic section of all, with access to the highest country in the world, "Lesotho," the biggest indigenous forest in the berg, the largest consolidation of rock art in the world and the highest waterfall on the planet.

The SMOKING DRAGON FESTIVAL

Fifteen years ago a crimson dawn welcomed a searing day. The first fingers of light touched the granite cliffs of the Amphitheatre. The rays warmed the leathery surface of a larger-than-usual egg in a scruffy nest. Something within was trying to break free. After a time, a snout appeared and then a tail. Into those chilly waters fell the half shell. Soon it was careering towards the lip of the 1000-metre Tugela Falls.

"But I can't fly yet" she sobbed, " I'm not like the others, I don't know how to do things the way they do them."

A bearded vulture rolled a bloodshot eye in her direction and said, "There is no right or wrong way to fly."

And over the edge of the escarpment shot the hatchling. She plummeted towards the forests below. Closing her eyes she waited for the final crunch, but then she realised that she had stopped free-falling, she was flying. Dragon wings beat through the azure skies.

And thus the beast was born.
